Why Premier Education Does A Chinese New Year Celebration
How to celebrate Chinese New Year at home
The actual first day of the Chinese New Year falls on Feb. 1st, Tuesday this year when we all have to go to work or school, unlike in China the whole country gets to celebrate the holiday for about three weeks. In a normal year, there are various activities in the Greater Austin area such as dragon dance, but there is not whole a lot of options right now, thanks to this never-ending pandemic.
But, if you feel like you want to do something at home with your students, here are some ideas for you to consider:
For foodies
Have a meal at a local Chinese restaurant. Food is probably the biggest part of the Chinese New Year tradition as families gather together from all parts of the country. Refer to this guide of some local restaurants in the Austin area but make sure to call before going there as some of them were closed due to the pandemic.
For explorers
If you are a more adventurous type, ask your student if they can lead the family to prepare a dumpling dinner. That can be a very interesting family event. You don’t have to make everything from scratch as that will be too challenging even for me. But you can purchase some dumpling skins from Asian stores and the rest is much easier. Ask us if you need more instructions how to make dumplings at home. Or your student can just call their parents to get the family recipes.
For entertainers
If you are more into entertainment, ask your student to show you the famous Spring Festival Gala hosted by CCTV There are going to be a heavy dose of propaganda in this annual event, but also some eye pleasing performance. This 4.5 hours long variety show features the hottest celebrities in China and is watched by over 1 billion people each year! Of course, you don’t have to watch the whole thing, but you can ask your student to show which ones they enjoy and explain to you why. Perhaps you will like them too!
Updated: there is another show is being put together by overseas Chinese and will be broadcasted online at 6:30pm on Jan 31st, 2022. There are some performances by the youth from the Austin Chinese-American Network. You can watch it live here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPvY2A1HS7k
Finally
If none of the above ideas appealing to you, just ask your student what they want to do!
If you have some great ideas, share with us too!
